In-line gearboxes can have the output shaft either coaxial (aligned) with the motor shaft or offset by a small distance, depending on the design of the gear train. Gears such as spur gears, helical gears, herringbone gears, and planetary gears are commonly used in in-line gearboxes to transmit the RPM of the motor to an output shaft parallel to the motor shaft.

In contrast, right-angle gearboxes transfer the RPM of a motor to an output shaft at right angles (90 degrees) from the motor shaft axis. Gears like bevel gears and worm gears are typically installed in right-angle gearboxes.
